It's the Year, Not the Room.

The Mothership. The Gorge at sunset. Deer Creek and Alpine in July, Dick’s on Labor Day, the Garden on New Year’s. Underneath the list is the belief that the room brings out the jam. That belief can be checked.

Rank every venue by the median length of a jam played there, and the fabled rooms aren’t where you’d expect. The top of the board sorts by era, not by address: the Sphere and Moon Palace from the current jamming boom, The Spectrum and Lakewood anchored in the stretched-out late 90s. Those are the band’s two long-jam stretches, when a normal night ran long everywhere. Madison Square Garden, the most-played room in the catalog, lands twelfth. Hampton, the Gorge, and Red Rocks don’t crack the group at all.

The spread is real: from the longest-jamming venue to the shortest is nearly three minutes, 6.7 down to 3.6. Something clearly separates one room from another. But a top four drawn entirely from the band’s two jammiest eras is the first hint that the thing doing the separating might be the year, not the room.

Jam length rises and falls by era. The Gorge and the older amphitheaters did their best business in the stretched-out late-90s and 2.0 years; the newer rooms only exist deep in the current jamming boom, when a normal night anywhere runs long. So the honest test isn’t how long a venue’s jams are: it’s how long they run next to a normal night of the same year.

Do that, and the venues line up almost perfectly on their era. Plot what a typical night jammed in the years each room was active against what the room actually delivered, and the dots fall on the diagonal.

The horizontal axis is what a typical jam ran in the years a venue was active; the vertical axis is the venue’s own median. They track the diagonal at a correlation of 0.90: era alone explains 81% of the difference between venues, before the room is even named.

What’s left after era, the true venue effect, is almost nothing. Across every room with enough shows, the era-adjusted premium runs from -0.5 to +0.7 minutes: under a minute at the extremes, a rounding error in the middle. Here are the rooms fans mythologize, raw median next to what’s left once the year is taken out.

So the rooms fans revere most turn out to be the ones the calendar explains best of all. Take the year out and the storied venues don’t jump; they settle, each landing within a few seconds of an ordinary night of its own time, a shade quieter if anything. Which leaves a stranger question than the one we started with: if the room isn’t what makes the jams run long, what is all that reverence actually measuring?

This measures one thing: the length of the improvisation, in minutes. It is not a verdict on whether a venue is special. A room can be unforgettable for its sightlines, its history, a crowd, a sunset, or a single night that rewired your sense of the band. Not one of those shows up in a jam’s runtime. What the tapes rule out is narrower: the idea that certain rooms reliably pull longer jams out of the band. They don’t. Where you are barely moves the clock. When you are moves it a lot.

It’s the same shape as the Sunday-show premium: a pattern fans feel in their bones that turns out to be mostly the calendar wearing a costume. So the reverence isn’t wrong, only misfiled. The magic is real. It just isn’t in the walls. It’s in the year you happened to catch them there.
